Roles within the Physiotherapy Department
The Physiotherapy Department employs approximately 40 physiotherapists as well as two allied health assistants. We provide tertiary level care to inpatients and outpatients across a wide range of specialties. We work closely within a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals, nursing staff, allied health and support staff. Our staff provide physiotherapy services across weekdays, weekends and public holidays as well as an evening service. Our mission is to optimise children's health and function in partnership with families and provide evidence-informed physiotherapy care at the right time and in the right place.
Allied Health Assistants
Our department includes allied health assistants who work alongside our physiotherapists to carry out treatment programs and provide other supportive roles within the department.
Paediatric Rotation Program - Grade 1 Physiotherapists
The Physiotherapy Department employs nine full-time grade 1 physiotherapists onto our Paediatric Rotation Program (PRP). These positions are most suited to early career physiotherapists, or physiotherapists looking to transition to paediatrics. PRP staff rotate through different clinical areas of the department every four months. The current rotation areas include:
- Intensive Care / Developmental Medicine / Cardiac and General Surgery / Transplantation
- Respiratory Medicine / Immunology
- Neurology / Neurosurgery / Adolescent Medicine / General Medicine
- Oncology / Neurodevelopmental / Neural Tube Defects / Plagiocephaly
- Orthopaedics / CP Surgery / Spinal Surgery
- Haematology / Burns / Plastics / Rheumatology
- Reliever
The aim of the program is to provide postgraduate clinical experience by integrating knowledge and skills from a broad area of paediatric physiotherapy, thereby increasing the number of physiotherapists with specialist paediatric experience and enhance the healthcare of children. Throughout the rotations physiotherapists receive supervision, guidance and feedback from senior physiotherapists along with a targeted professional development program.
New graduate physiotherapists applying to our rotational program should ideally have successfully completed placements in large hospitals with high acuity caseloads.
Graduated physiotherapists applying to our rotational program should ideally have work experience in large hospitals with high acuity caseloads. Paediatric experience is useful, but not necessary.
Senior Physiotherapists
We have a highly experienced group of senior physiotherapists (grade 2 to grade 4) within the Physiotherapy Department who each work predominantly within a specific area of clinical practice. Our senior physiotherapists are dedicated to optimising patient care and supporting the next generation of paediatric physiotherapists.
Casual positions
The Physiotherapy Department also has a pool of casual physiotherapists who predominantly work on weekends and public holidays. Advertisements for casual positions are released periodically on the RCH Careers website when staffing levels result in a need for additional recruitment.
